2007 Woman of the Year: Mary Burnside

In Golf News, Mary Burnside was recognized as the Woman of the Year in Jacksonville, FL for 2007. The Golf News has been recognizing local golf leaders annually since 1994.

She can’t play golf but that doesn’t mean she’s not involved. Many 77-year-old people have left the course behind, but not her. “If I quit, that’s the end of me,” said Mary Burnside, sitting in a cart at Eagle Harbor as she followed her Tuesday routine of watching her pals on Ladies’ Day. “Golf is my life and I don’t have to play to enjoy it.”

She can’t play due to her physical problems. One leg is gone and both shoulders need replacing. Her back continually hurts. But she’s a constant presence at local and state events.

Burnside is a student of the Rules of Golf and is in demand to officiate on any level. She also has a deep devotion to the Jacksonville Women’s GA and the photos you see in the Golf News come from her camera.

Her golf ended a decade ago due to back problems and then the end was assured when her right leg was amputated in 2001 after a small wound got out of control and big problems set in.

“It’s a matter of accepting what you have,” she said. “Golf has been a great part of my life and, thanks to carts, it still is.”
