Hiestand Captures
First Amateur Title

Jane Hiestand, Naples defeated 3 time State Amateur Champion Taffy Brower of
Boynton Beach 5 & 4 to capture the 78th FWSGA State Amateur Match
Play Championship at Ocean Reef Golf Club in Key Largo May 7-11, 2007.
Hiestand
the 1st seed, defeated 23rd seed Taffy Brower, 5 & 4 in the final
match to secure her first Florida title. Hiestand came out with a quick
start finishing the front nine with a 5-under par 31 to take a 7-up lead at
the turn. Hiestand eventually captured the championship on the 14th
hole with a 5 & 4 victory. In route to the finals, Hiestand defeated
Christina Wood, Vero Beach in the first round 6 & 4. In the second round,
Hiestand defeated Meredith Wolf 4 & 3. Hiestand advanced to the
quarterfinals defeating Monica Von Glahn 1-up. In the semifinals, Hiestand
defeated Sisi Hedges 2 & 1 to advance to the final
round.
In the
first flight, Lynn Thomson, of Key Largo, defeated Mindy Smith, of Tampa
2-up. The second flight featured Christina Ricci of Miami Shores, defeating
Carolyn Amos of Vero Beach, 2 & 1. The third flight had Sandy Goodwin of
Miami, defeating Delores Ainsworth of Port St. Lucie 3 & 2.
The
Championship consisted of 80 players playing an 18-hole seeding round
Monday, May 7 and advancing to match play Tuesday, May 8th. After the
qualifying round, players were divided into 4 flights. The championship
flight consisted of 32 players with the additional 3 flights with 16 players
in each.
