FWSGA State Amateur Match Play
Championship at Southern Dunes
Golf and Country Club May 2-6,

Mendez, 17, the 12th seed,
defeated 7th seed Diane Lang, 4
and 3 in the final match to
secure the title. In route to
the finals, Mendez defeated
Sharon Keil in the first round 1
up. In the second round, Mendez
rallied back from five down with
five holes left to win the final
five holes and win the match in
19 holes versus Sarah
Phillips-Durst. Mendez advanced
to the quarterfinals and upset
4th seed Terrell Italiano 2 and
1. In the semifinals, Mendez
defeated Mary Jane Hiestand 3
and 2 to advance to the final
match.
In the first flight, Therese
Quinn, of Jacksonville, defeated
Kathy Westlund, of Fort Meyers 3
& 2. The second flight featured
Pat Rogers of Tampa, defeating
Marsha Funk of Palm Beach
Gardens, 1 up. The third flight
had Christina Wood of Vero
Beach, defeating Christine
Martin of Clearwater 4 & 3.
The Championship consisted of 96
players playing an 18-hole
seeding round Monday, May 2 and
advancing to match play Tuesday,
May 3rd. After the qualifying
round, players were divided into
4 flights. The championship
flight consisted of 32 players
with the additional 3 flights
with 16 players in each.
